Summer 2011

Please browse through the quicklinks below for some great photos of our summer tennis programs!

This summer we expanded our children's  programs to two new sites, Lenox and Stockbridge, embracing the new 10 AND UNDER TENNIS, where The Rules Have Changed!  We began the season with a QuickStart Tennis Workshop to train a squadron of coaches, drawing from our local high school tennis teams and recent top-drawer tennis-playing college grads.

  • The Lee High School site drew 31 U10 and U12 Children. Click here to see photos & read more.
  • The Lenox Community Center site drew 21 U10 and U12 children. Click here to see photos & read more.
  • The Stockbridge Main Street site drew a smaller but dedicated group of 10 children, interesting in that the parents and siblings pitched in as volunteers. Click here to see photos & read more.

We were able to field two USTA JR Team Tennis teams, an U14 JTT, and an U18 JTT, which finished off the season with a trip to the WMA JTT Championships in Forest Park, Springfield.

During the month of May, we ran Special Olympics Tennis at Miss Hall's School on Saturday mornings in Pittsfield. This program was made possible by the many Lee CTA members who volunteered to assist with coaching. Two of our special olympians qualified for the MA Summer Games at Harvard University in June and they both won gold medals! Click here to see photos & read more. On Saturday afternoons, 10 AND UNDER TENNIS was introduced at the Lee HS Tennis Courts.

Two fundraisers were run by volunteer/board member Arline Breskin: The League Brunch was attended by 29 members and raised $294. A Love All In Chester was attended by 30 friends of the Lee CTA and raised $490. Volunteer Ed Lahey is running the US Open Bus Trip fundraiser for this Wednesday - 53 tickes sold, only 2 seats left! We've had 2 major donations: $1000 from board member, Wayne Donelon, and $500 from Tom Hornbeck, the brother of Steve Hornbeck, for which our Youth Fund is in memoriam.

In closing, our board will be setting goals for 2012 at their meeting this Thursday. Any comments, likes or dislikes on past events, programs, initiatives, will be greatly appreciated. We are a volunteer membership organization, a 501c3 Commonwealth of MA charitable corporation. We appreciate donations of any size, all of which are tax deductible. Before going to our online payment system this year, which I think has been much appreciated by all, we had a section on our application for $5 or $10 donations to either our Youth Fund or Tennis Court Fund. The online registration process does not allow for this more obvious chance to donate, so please consider our needs, especially our goal to continue assisting our youth access year-round tennis via Lee CTA scholarships, as well as providing College Scholarships to our outstanding tennis athlete / student / community service high school seniors.

Breaking News: We're applying for a USTA Facilities Assistance Grant to help finance the resurfacing of the Lee High School tennis courts, which are showing a bit of wear and tear after eleven years of use. We have a good chance of receiving these matching funds, especially since the Lee CTA and the Lee Schools have agreed to paint the blended 60' lines to help facilitate the new Ten and Under Tennis played on smaller courts. Any donations to the Tennis Court Fund will help expedite this project.

And last, but not least, be sure to check out our new online Court Scheduler for reserving the two red clay court at Greenock Country Club. This new onlne reservation system has proven quite popular and easy to use. With a click of the mouse, you can see which courts are available and reserve a court for 3-5 days in advance. The court fees are the best deal - $8 to $16 per hr. - that's only $2 to $4 per person! Start planning your Fall tennis now! After Labor Day, when the weather is perfect and the league play winds down, the courts will be wide-open all day long!

Thank you for your support in building the sport of tennis in Lee and the surrounding towns. By participating in the Adult Leagues and Youth Programs, attending the Fundraisers, and sending Donations, we work together to grow and enjoy the lifelong sport of tennis!

Sincerely,
